WAFCO Runs 1st Due Dwelling
Mon. Feb 22nd 2010

At 2025 hrs Box 2653 was transmitted for the reported kitchen fire in a residence on Hewitt Road. The 1st alarm assignment consisted of WAFCO units along with 17-Rescue (LNHARS) Engine 17-63 (LFD) Engine 47-62 (SVFC) Tender 48 (AVFC) and RIC 21 (RTFC).

Assistant 26 arrived on-scene with in minutes of dispatch reporting a working fire on the 1st floor. Engine 26 (riding out of Sta #2) and Chief 26 arrived moments later with Chief 26 ordering the Engine to lead off through the front door of the residence. The crew of Engine 26 assisted by Chief 17 (LFD) advanced the 1.75“ hand line into the dwelling knocking down the visible fire which now involved a majority of the first floor as well as the rear stairwell. 2nd due Engine 17-63 was ordered to lay in and send its manpower to check the floor above for possible extension. 3rd due Quint 26 arrived on scene shortly thereafter with command ordering its main to the roof and its crew to advance a backup line into the structure.

Due to the type of building construction multiple walls and ceilings had to be pulled to expose the hidden fire on the first and second floors. After being advised that a massive amount of overhaul needed to be performed Command requested the first  two engines from the 2nd alarm, Engine 17-61 (LFD) and Engine 47-61 (SVFC) as well LFD’s Cascade Unit.

Station 23 (SFC) and Station 49 (FFD) provided cover assignments for the southern portion of the county while companies operated on scene. The last units cleared the scene at 0115 hrs after the extensive overhaul and investigation were completed.
